Blog Etiquette Question??

So I am wondering what the "proper" blog etiquette is when somebody leaves you a comment and you want to reply back.  Do you comment on your own post and hope they come back to read it? Or do you run over to their blog and comment on a post completely unrelated to what you want to say but know if you do, they will get it? Often I want to thank someone for a great idea, or just comment on what they had to say, have a little chat perhaps but I never quite know how to go about it. Can someone help a girl out?
Thanks!

I wish EVERYONE had their email attached to their blog. It would make responding to a comment through email so much easier. It's under your settings...you just click...show email. If my readers are linked, I almost always respond back just through email.

If not, I usually go to their blog and leave a comment on their most recent post. That way I know they will see it. But lately blogger is acting up and never recognizes me signed in to leave a comment, even when I sign in four times. I'm seriously considering switching to wordpress. With wordpress commenting is so much easier too...you just reply to the reader in the comment section and an email notification is sent to your reader.

Hope that helps friend!

Hiya!
For me, it depends on what the comment was.
If it is a regular friend visiting, I just go see what she's up to on her blog, and leave her a sweet note, too.
If it's a question, I reply to them by email or if my answer needs to be in the post itself, I edit the post and add the info.
All my comments come to my gmail account.
Of course, if I get a direct email from the button on my blog, I respond through the email.
I never reply in my own comments. I read somewhere that most people are not inclined to come back to read it, and I know that to be true.
Have you set your blogger settings to receive emails when you get a comment? If not, you should :)
That way, you have all the names in a list and the link to their site handy.
I hope that helps ya?
(How are you gonna respond to this comment, LOL?!)

Sorry if you get this twice-was unsure if blogger saved it?

If I can't reply to them via their email (some don't have it available) then I go back to their page & comment, because more than likely they will not go back to that certain blog post again!! Hope it helped! xoxo

I always like it when I ask a question if the owner of that blog answers in a comment on my blog, because I con't usually go back to check the same post. It also makes me feel like that person really cares about my question. Just my opinion.

For me I eitehr email (if it is linked to their name) or go comment on thier page...

I LOVE the blogs that have "get an emial for follw up comments" box on theirs personally. If I am leaving a comment and I want to hear what others have to say about that post I click the box, otherswise I don't. Then when comments are left I get to see it in my email :) BTW.. your blog has that! BUT I cna't figure out how to do it on my own blogs... Joy :(
